When the Old Year Won’t LET GO

Everywhere I look right now, people are writing about the NEW year. Fresh start. Beginnings.

What if the old year won’t let go?

All of the old patterns still play their tune.

All of the old thoughts still resonate through your brain.

All of the old behaviors still reside in your actions.

All of the old is still STUCK.

All of the old regrets linger.

All of the old things undone are still – undone.

Remember – Jesus is new every day. Every moment.

The old things are gone – the new is here.

Even when it doesn’t feel like it.

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.        2 Corinthians 5: 17-21

Before you move on, take a moment and ask why. Why won’t the old let go?

What are you holding onto that tightly?

That is what you need to give to Him. He can take it. Let Him.

Yet this I call to mind and therefore

I have hope:

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:21-24

So, when the old year won’t let go, YOU let go of it.

One New Thing – Endure the Race

The Houston Marathon was yesterday. It was cold, rainy day. When I woke up, I didn’t want to leave the house. I don’t think any of the runners woke up and thought, It’s cold and rainy, I think I’ll stay home today. After months of hard work and preparation, a little bit of rain wasn’t enough to keep the runners from their long anticipated race.

As the New Year is still new and fresh starts are each morning, be encouraged to run the race before you.

My race is my health.

What is yours?

I’ll admit, this message is for me too. It’s been a discouraging week. I’ll share more about that in a detailed post later this week. There was one bright spot. I put on a belt I haven’t worn in a few months. When I started to tighten it, I couldn’t believe how much tighter I could fasten it! The leather is crinkled, cracked, and worn – it does not lie about where it used to fit. I counted 8 notches tighter! Next week I’ll tell you how many inches that equals and how One New Thing has spurred me on towards my goal! Until then, I leave you with this verse:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12: 1-3

One New Thing – Water

One New Thing is back for the New Year!

Last year I began a journey to healthy living. Quite a few changes needed to be made, but I didn’t think I could do everything at once, so One New Thing was born. (Tip: the underlined words in orange will link you to information on a different post!)

This year, many of you have at least one item on your list of Resolutions pertaining to healthy living. I challenge you to follow the One New Thing posts as you strive for your goals.

My One New Thing to start off the year – Water.

I know I don’t stay hydrated enough. Did you know that if you are thirsty, you are already showing signs of dehydration? I didn’t.

I found some interesting facts about water, especially drinking first thing in the morning.

As I start my mornings drinking water, I’ll also fill with the Living Water.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,  but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13, 14

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. Psalm 42:1
